John Wallis Bates came from Washington County, Virginia,  
 
 
 
to settle early in Letcher County, Kentucky.  John Wallis 
 
 
 
Bates married first, 29 October 1803, to Levina Light, who 
 
 
 
was born in Washington County, Virginia. John Wallis married
 


second to Sarah Walthrop, 22 April 1812.  Sarah was born 
 


ca. 1793 in North Carolina.  He died  May 1843 and Sarah
 
 
 
died about 1865.  Both are buried in the Old Bates Cemetery at
 
 
 
Kona, Letcher County, Kentucky.  John Wallis and Sarah had

John W. Bates, Jr. was born about 1813. He married Elizabeth 
 

 
"Bett" Hall, daughter of William J. "Gunsmith Billy" and Margaret 
 
 
(Johnson) Hall.  He is buried at Kite, Knott County, Kentucky.
 
 
 
Children are as follows:
 
 
 
a. Eliza Bates was born about 1836.  She married first 
 
 
 
   Marshall  Hall and was left a widow by 1870.  She then
 
 
 
   married Elisha Johnson.         
 
 
 
b. Martha "Patsy" Bates was born about 1838.  She 
 
 
 
   married first Lisha Mullins 29 March 1857 and married second 


   May 29, 1877 to William Harris.  
 
 
 
c. William J. Bates was born November 23, 1839 and
 
 
 
   died March 8, 1919.  William married July 27, 1867 
 
 
 
   Eleanor "Nellie" Hall.  William served in the CSA from
 
 
 
   1862 until April 12, 1865. 

 
d. Sarah Bates was born 1841 and died 1894.  She 
 
 
 
   married March 31, 1866 James King.

 

e. Margaret "Peggy" Bates was born about 1842 and died in


   1921. Margaret was crippled and did a lot of knitting.



f. John Henderson Bates was born about 1844.



g. Elizabeth Bates was born April 12, 1846 and died 13 September 


   1940.  She married Harrison Hall.

 
 
h. Robert Bates was born December 10, 1847 and died

 
 
   February 11, 1930.  He married first May 15, 1869 
 
 
 
   Luansy Mullins and married second October 12, 1886 

 
 
   Eliza Lucas.
 
 
 
i. Washington Uriah Bates was born April 6, 1849. 

 
 
   He married Lavanna "Pink" Anna Hall.



j. Theophilis Garrett Bates born about 1852.  He married

 
 
   February 20, 1875  Mary Jane Bates.

 

k. James Bates born about 1854.  He married February  

 
 
   28, 1876 Elender "Sis" Hall.  


 
l. Jesse Bates was born February 25, 1856 and died 


 
   November 30, 1943.  He married first on March 8,1877 Hannah

  

   Caudill and married  second in 1926 Katie Isaacs.


 
m. Susanna M. Bates was born April 18, 1857.  She 
 


   married first February 4, 1877 William Mullins and
 
 
 
   married second "Dog" Hall.
 
 
 
n. Martin Lee Bates was born January 9, 1859.


 
o. Miles Bates was born May 16, 1861 and died October
 


   5, 1944.  He married Angeline Hall.
 
 

   



 





 
   Margaret Bates was born about 1815. She married 27 



   March 1834, Payne Johnson, son of William and Lucy (Ayers)



   Johnson.  Margaret died March 4, 1855 and Payne died March 



   5, 1882.  They are both buried in the Johnson/Bumgardner 



   Cemetery at Dorton, Kentucky. Their Children are as follows: 



a. Sarah Jane Johnson was born January 31, 1836 and 


   died September 4, 1916.  She married first November 



   10, 1853 Leonard Kenny and married second George 


   
    Adams in 1860.



b. Eliza Johnson was born 1838.  She married November 



   11, 1857 Henry Horne.


 
c. William "Bill" Johnson was born about 1840 and 



   died 1913.  He married December 6, 1860 Arminta 



   Sowards.



d. Margaret Johnson was born about 1842.  She married 



   William Little June 3,1871.  



e. Lucy A. Johnson was born about 1844.  She was never



   married.



f. John W. Johnson was born 1845 and died during the 



   Civil War.



g. Uriah Washington Johnson was born September 17, 



   1849 and died December 30, 1928.  He married August



   25, 1881 Rebecca Isom. 


h. Elizabeth Johnson was born about 1851 and died



   December 30, 1928.  She married William Roberts October 14, 


   1875.



i. Mary J. Johnson was born May 5, 1852 and died 


   December 28, 1937.  She married January 17, 1902



   Will Bumgardner.



j. Robert Pleasant Johnson was born 1855.



 


 



 Martha Irby was born 11 December 1816 and died 18 April  



 1895. She married March 20, 1834 Joseph Craft, son of James



 and Drucilla (Hammonds) Craft.  Children are as follows:


a. John Henderson Craft was born December 20, 1834 



   and died September 13, 1920.  He married October 11, 



   1855 Nancy Jane Caudill.  


b. Sarah Craft was born February 10, 1837 and died 



   August 31, 1898. She married October 12, 1854 Smith



   Mullins. 



c. Druscilla Craft was born April 7, 1839 and died August



   27, 1876. She married Stephen Reynolds.



d. James W. Craft was born July 26, 1841.  



e. William Richardson Craft was born November 24, 


   1843 and died 1928.  He married June 21, 1868 



   Emily Jane Sergent.



f. Martha Manerva Craft was born December 7, 1845 and died



   August 25, 1936.  She married July 8, 1869 Joe Fouts.



g. Mary Craft was born January 4, 1848 and died September 17, 



   1938.  She married April 19, 1872 James Mullins.



h. Joseph A. Craft was born March 6, 1850 and died in 1929.



   He married first Samantha Smith, married secong Julia 



   Tapp, and married third Mary Mullins.



i. Eliza Craft was born 1852/1853.  She married first  




   John Christopher Reynolds in 1870 and second Henry Hensley.



j. Elizabeth V. Craft was born February 6, 1855 and 

 

   died April 1, 1855 of whooping cough.



k. Nancy J. Craft was born March 12, 1856 and died 


  
   January 18, 1950.  She married 1875 Wilbur Green.    



l. Robert B. Craft was born March 30, 1860 and died in 1901.



m. Morgan T. Craft was born February 4, 1862 and died December 


   16, 1888.  He married Sally Pearl.



 


 
 



 Eliza Agness Bates was born March 1819 and died   



   February 1, 1892. She married Joel Ellis Wright, son of Joel 


   Martin and Susanah Wright.  Joel E. was born July 7, 1817   



   and died September 24, 1879. They are both buried on Kentucky  



   River near the site of their home place a few miles from Kona,



   Kentucky.  Their children are as follows:



a. Solomon Wright was born about 1841 and was murdered during 

 

   the Civil War.

 
b. John B. Wright (John Wesley) "Bad John" was born 
 


    April 17, 1844 died January 30, 1931.  He married 
 



    October 13, 1866 Martha "Mattie" Humphrey.  Mattie
 

 
    is buried in a cemetery at the head of Dunham,  

 

    Kentucky. John is buried on a hillside  overlooking 
 


    his last home at Pound, Wise County, Virginia.  



c. Sarah "Sally" Wright was born March 10, 1847 and  



   died November 8, 1925.  She married July 15, 1869

    
   Abraham Potter.  They are both buried in the Potter 


   Cemetery at Payne Gap, Kentucky.



d. Susan Wright was born 1851 and died 1912.  She  



   married first July 8, 1882 Thomas Davis and 



   married second July 21, 1883 G. Martin Venters.



   She is buried in the Joel E. Wright Cemetery, Old


   Payne Gap Road near Kona, Kentucky.



e. William Jesse Wright was born September 1, 1853 and



   died  April 17, 1935.  He married first April 11, 1875 



   Elizabeth Moore, married second December 12, 1882  



   Maggie Perdue, married third (-?-), married  fourth December 


   17, 1885 Mary Brummett, and married fifth March 3, 1893 


   Nickatie Vanover.  He is buried in the Broas Wright Cemetery, 


   Letcher County, Kentucky.

 

f. Joel Martin Wright was born November 29, 1856 and 



   died August  5, 1933.  He married May 30, 1877 Jane R. 



   Venters in Wise  County, Virginia.  They are both buried 



   at Broas Wright Hollow, Hamond, Kentucky.





g. Samuel Wright was born December 10, 1859 and 



   died August 7, 1921.  He married September 4, 1880



   Martha J. Reynolds,  she was born November 20, 



   1860 and died June 26, 1950. They are both buried 



   in the Reynolds Cemetery at Seco, Kentucky.



 



 



 Jesse Bates was born 1821 and died about 1883. He  married 


    first Elizabeth Asbury, she was born November 14, 1824 and 


    died November 14, 1873.  Jesse married second August 2, 1874 


   Ibby Victoria Berry born October 10, 1850 and died June 24, 


   1928.  Jesse was in the CSA November 1, 1861 - October 20, 


   1862. 



 a. John Benton F. Bates was born about 1844.



 b. Margaret Bates was born 1848 and died October 10, 



    1852 of flux at age 4.

 

 c. Sarah Ann Bates was born 1850 and died October 17, 



    1852 of flux at age 2. 



 d. Elizabeth Bates was born October 20, 1852.  She married
    

  
    October 15, 1877 James B. Hall.


 e. Mary Jane Bates was born November 9, 1854.  She married 1st


    October 30, 1874 to Nelson Webb.  She married 2nd February


    20, 1875 Theophelis Garrett Bates.



f. Louisia/Eliza Bates was born about 1857.  She married 



   January 7, 1875 Jason Hall.



g. William J. Bates was born about 1860.  He married March 26,


   1878 Lettisha "Letty" Hammonds.



h. Benjamin Emmett Bates was born April 27, 1862 and  



   died March 27, 1912.  He married May 4, 1881 Margaret Lucas.



i. Hansford William Bates was born October 21, 1875 and 



   died November 3, 1875.  (Some records show the name to 



   be Mansford.)



j. Patrick Hagen Bates was born September 10, 1878 and  



   died July 11, 1927.  He married in January 14,1898 



   Amanda Bentley.  He was seriously wounded while on duty



   in Letcher County, KY.  He was shot in the stomach and 



   died three or four days later at the hospital in Seco, KY. 
 


k. Rosamond Bates was born October 1879.  She married



   in December 24, 1897 N. R. Craft.









 



 James Bates was born about 1823 and died April 11, 1864. He 



    married, February 26, 1843 to Elizabeth Adams, daughter of 



    Benjamin and Nancy (Holbrook) Adams.  James served in the 



    Army of the CSA from November 1, 1861 to October 20, 1862. 



    He was murdered by Rebels during the Civil War.  Elizabeth



    was born about 1824 and died July 1880 of pneumonia.  They 



    are both buried at the Old Bates Cemetery at Kona, Kentucky.  



    Their children are as follows:



 a. Henry C. Bates was born about 1844.  He married March 



    13, 1868 Rachel Lee.  He is buried at Dean (Rockhouse), 



    Kentucky.



b. Sarah Bates was born about 1846.  She married August



   13, 1868 David F. Lee.  They are both buried at Caney,



   Knott County, Kentucky.



c. Nancy Bates was born October 28, 1848 and died 



   September 10, 1927.  She married December 9, 1870



   Andrew  J. Wright.  Nancy is buried in the Nancy Wright



   Cemetery, Beefhide Kentucky.  Andrew is buried in the 
  


   Samuel Wright  Cemetery, Beefhide, Kentucky.



d. Letitia "Letty" Bates was born November 15, 1851 and 



   died May 12,1934.  She married April 12, 1872 William S. 



   "Bill" Wright.  W. S. and Letty were primary figures in the 



   Reynolds/Wright Feud.  They are both buried in the Thorton



   Cemetery at Thorton, Kentucky. 



e. John W. "Ringer" Bates was born November 23, 



   1852.  He married first about 1882 Mary "Polly" Pigmon
  


   and married second July 27, 1901 Elizabeth Gibson.



f. Martha Bates was born January 19, 1855 and died in 1902.  



   She was never married. Martha was buried in The Greasy ,



   Cemetery at Carr, Knott County Kentucky.



g. Jenny "Letha Jane" Bates was born 1858 and died 



   October 21, 1919. She married in October 2,1878 Epperson Hall. 



   She is buried on Right Beaver, Bowling/Hall Cemetery, Knott 


  County, KY.



h. Margaret Bates was born about 1860 and died in 1874



   age 15 years.



i. James Bates was born about 1863.



 



 



Robert "Robin" Bates was born August 24, 1825 and died 



   September 25, 1921. He married first to Phoebe Lee and second



   March 3, 1869 to Sarah Lee and third May 19, 1888 Elizabeth



   Bentley, d/o Aaron Rice Bentley and Darcus Hall.  Robert was



   a captain in the Army of CSA from 1861- May 1865.  Robert



   was instrumental in the formation of Knott County, Kentucky. 



   Robert and Elizabeth are both buried at Colson, Kentucky.  



   Their children are as follows:



a. William A. Bates was born about 1859 an died August 



   10, 1844, in  Wise County, Virginia of the flux.   He



   married Martha J. Smiley.



b. Martin Van Buren Bates was born about 1861.  He



   married first May 17, 1885 Martha Cook and second April 8, 


   1891 Mary E.Lark in Wise County, Virginia.



c. Theophilos Garrett Bates was born about 1869 and 



   died July 25, 1884 in Wise County, Virginia of flux.



d. Amanda Grazella Bates was born December 24, 1869



   and died December 25, 1945.  She married January



   27, 1887 John C.Calhoun.

  

e. Mary Jane Bates was born September 1856 and married Franklin 


   P. "Chick" Allen.



f. Robert, Jr. "Bobby" Bates was born September 5, 



   1888 and died in 1924.  



g. Eliza Bates was born January 2, 1889 and died 



   February 11, 1969.  She married in 1909 Ira Collins.



h. Henry Bates was born September 5, 1892 and died 



   July 1, 1974.  He married September 1913 Arminta 



   Tolliver.



i. Ralph Booten Bates was born April 1, 1894 and died



   June 18, 1983.  He married Ethel Kiser.



j. Uriah L. Bates was born June 25, 1896 and died October



   27, 1979.  He married October 1933 Connie Slone.



k. Jesse Bates was born February 27, 1899 and died



   May 12, 1980.  He married December 12, 1923 Dela



   Mae Stewart.



l. Beckham Bates was born February 18, 1901 and died 



   March 19,1985.  He married June 29, 1925 Auda Everidge.



m. Sam J. Bates was born November 19, 1902 and died July



   30, 1963.  He married Elizabeth Sowards.



n. Joe Bates was born May 26, 1904 and died in 1956.



   He never married.



o. Lola Bates was born March 28, 1906.  She married  



   Roosevelt Honeycutt in 1928.



p. Tandy Bates was born December 23, 1908 and died



   September 26, 1937.  He married Lonnie Bates in 1930.



q. Manerva Bates was born February 8, 1911 and died



   January 6, 1983.  She married first James Curtis 


   Holbrook in 1932 and second Luther Hampton.



r. Mildred Cleo Bates was born September 11, 1912 and



   died February 25,1991.  She married October 7, 1932  



   Luther Baker.










  Uriah Bates was born about 1828 and died May 12, 1862.  



 He married October 14, 1849 Lettisha "Lettie" Adams, d/o 



 Benjamin Adams and Nancy Holbrook.  Died of measles



 at Holston, Virginia during the Civil War.  He is buried at



 Gate City, Virginia on a farm.  There are fourteen graves



 marked with a memorial marker.  Uriah enlisted in the 



 Confederate Army on November 1, 1861 near Pound Gap, 



 Virginia. He was a Private in Co. F 5th Kentucky Infantry.  



 He was listed on the April 30, 1862 roll as sick and in the



   hospital.  Their children are as follows:



a. Mary Jane Bates was born March 25, 1853 and died December 31, 


   1937.  She was never married.
 


 b. William Bates was born May 1859.  He was never 

 

    married.







 



  Sarah Ann "Saryan" Bates was born January 26, 1830 



    and died November 6, 1906.  She married March 12, 



    1852  William Mullins.  He was born May 23, 1830 



    and died May 1908.  Their children are as follows:







 a. John A. Mullins was born February 11, 1854 and died 


 
    November 30, 1909.  



 b. Mary J. Mullins was born October 2, 1855 and died October 


   24, 1913.  She married April 17,1875 John Venters.



 c. Sarah Mullins was born June 25, 1857 and died June 1, 



    1945.  She married James Madison Blevins March 30, 1877.  



 d. Margaret Mullins was born May 27, 1859.  She married

   

    James Akers February 20, 187?.



 e. William Booker Mullins was born about 1861.  He


    married first Rebecca Venters and second Elizabeth



    "Betty" Hughes.



 f. Eliza J. Mullins was born about 1864 and died 1898.  



    She married February 9, 1881 Henry Adams.



 g. Martha Mullins was born about 1866,  She married 



    Woodrow House.



 h. Beldora Mullins was born October 20, 1868 and died



    July 21, 1939.  She married August 12, 1885 Sherman 



    Potter.



 i. Anna H. Mullins was born about 1872.  She married Mack


    Richmond.



 j. Martin V. Mullins was born August 13, 1873 and died 



    May 20, 1903.





 



 Henderson Bates was born about 1832 and died September 



  1866 from injuries received in the Civil War.  He married  



  November 23,1850 Martha Robinson, d/o William Robinson



  and Hannah Hutchinson.  Henderson was a Captain in the 



  Confederate Army serving from October 4, 1862 to April 12,



  1865 in Co. D 13th Kentucky Cavalry and with John Hunt



  Morgan in June 1864.  Henderson apparently had a second



  family with Elender Dale.  Children of Henderson and Martha



  are as follows:



a. Sarah Bates was born February 16, 1852.  She married

    
   
   February  2, 1871 John Simpson Adams.



b. John W. Bates was born about 1854 and died in 1923.  



    He married first April 16, 1875 Letha Jane Craft and



    second December 6, 1886 Mary Emily Morgan.

 

c. Elizabeth "Lizzie" Bates was born January 10, 1856 


    
   and died June 9, 1933.  She was never married.


  
d. Mary Jane Bates was born about 1858 and died at 
  
  

   age 4.



e. Martin V. Bates was born about 1860 and he was 



   killed in Menifee County, Kentucky, November 16,


 
   1928 age 68. He married Lettie Craft February 25, 1881.



f. Elender "Ellen" Bates was born June 17, 1863 and 



   died  November 18, 1933.  She married September



   5, 1883 John Quiller Bentley.



   Children of Henderson and Elender Dale:



g. Robert Bates was born about 1858.



h. Henderson Bates was born about 1860.



i. Uriah Bates was born about 1862.



j. Henry Bates was born about 1864.



k. Martha Jane Bates was born July 10, 1866 and died 1951 in 


   Canada.  She married May 2, 1883 Joseph Floyd 


   Porter/Williamson. 









 



Mary Jane Bates was born about 1836 and died September 



   28, 1852 at age 16 years.  She is buried at the Old Bates



   Cemetery at Kona, Kentucky.



 



 

Martin Van Buren Bates was born November 9, 1837 and died January 
7, 1919. Martin married first June 17, 1871 at St. Martins in the Field, London, 
England to Anna Haning Swan and second to Anna Lovanna Weatherby. As a adult 
Martin grew to a height of 7 feet 11 1/2 inches and with a weight of nearly 500 
pounds, and was known as "The Kentucky Giant". He and his nephew, Devil John 
Wright, performed with the Robinson Circus, traveling to England where they 
performed before Queen Victoria. Anna Swan was born August 6, 1846 in Nova 
Scotia and died August 5, 1888. They are both buried in the Mound Hill Cemetery 
at Seville, Medina County, Ohio. Martin joined the Confederate Army November 1, 
1861 at Whitesburg, Kentucky as a Private in Co. F 5th Kentucky Infantry he 
served until April 12, 1865. Their children were as follows: a. female was born 
May 19, 1872 and died May 19, 1872. The baby was 27 inches long and weighed 18 
pounds. b. male was born January 18, 1879 and died January 19, 1879 in Medina, 
Ohio and the baby was 30 inches long, head circumference was 19 inches, weighed 
23 3/4 pounds, and its feet were 6 inches long.
